The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, played a leading role in bringing the BRICS nations together as it hosted the First BRICS Culture Working Group (CWG) Meeting on 29 April 2026 at Kartavya Bhawan, New Delhi. The meeting, which was held virtually, was chaired by Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and was attended by leaders, delegates, and representatives of countries like Russia, South Africa, Ethiopia, Indonesia, UAE, Iran, China, Brazil, and other member nations.

India's BRICS Chairship 2026 carries the theme: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability. During the meeting, the deliberations delved into discussions on the Creative Economy, the Cultural and Creative Industries, and Artificial Intelligence. It also focused on how member nations can grow their creative sectors and deal with the impact of AI on copyright and cultural content. Talks on Cultural Heritage Protection and Return of Cultural Property were also conducted, which highlighted the need for working together to protect shared heritage and bring back cultural artefacts that belong to member nations. Other conversations centered around Culture, Climate, and Sustainable Development and highlighted how culture and traditional knowledge can help communities tackle climate change and build a more sustainable future.
The Indian delegation was represented by Dr Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA, and Shri Ramesh C Gaur, Professor and Dean, IGNCA, along with other officials from the Ministry of Culture.
The meeting concluded on 30 April 2026, with Day 2 focusing on the BRICS Theatre Festival and the BRICS Cultural Festival.
