Shishir Kumar Lahiri was born on 10 September 1919 in Gauripur, Assam, to Praanath Lahiri and Nirmala Devi. He spent his formative years in Rangpur, then part of undivided India – a known hub of revolutionary activities. Drawn to the Swadeshi movement from a young age, he joined the Jugantar Dal and became actively involved in the national freedom struggle.
As a dedicated member of the Jugantar Party, Shishir Kumar played a key role in secretly exchanging information among revolutionaries and participated in several underground activities. His involvement led to imprisonments on three occasions, during which he endured brutal torture at the hands of British colonial authorities.
After India gained independence, Shishir Lahiri moved to Jalpaiguri and on the advice of fellow patriots like Rabindranath Sikder and Manindranath Roy, he joined the Social Welfare Department. He later founded a school in Milanpalli, Siliguri, and established a branch of the department in Rajganj, continuing his lifelong service to the people.
In recognition of his contribution to India’s freedom struggle, the Government of India awarded Shishir Kumar Lahiri with the Tamra Patra in 1988. Shishir Kumar Lahiri passed away on 23 January 2001, leaving behind a legacy of courage, service and patriotism.
