Bhag Singh was born on 27 December 1917 in Bareh village, Budhlada tehsil, Mansa District, Punjab to Sucha Singh, a farmer. From a young age, he was filled with a strong sense of patriotism and desire to see India free from British colonial rule. Deeply inspired by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his powerful slogan, “You give me blood, I will give you freedom,” Bhag Singh joined the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army, INA) and actively took part in the struggle for India’s independence.
During his time with the INA, Bhag Singh was arrested by British authorities and sentenced to "Kala Pani," a term symbolizing severe punishment. He also spent seven months imprisoned in Kuala Lumpur Jail in Malaya (now Malaysia), enduring hardship for the cause of national freedom. After his release, he returned to India and led a peaceful life.
Though Bhag Singh lived quietly post-independence, he remained a respected figure in his community. Bhag Singh passed away on 10 January 2007. His funeral was held with full state honours, draped in the National Flag, with a ceremonial gun salute by the Punjab Police, marking a hero’s farewell.
