Murshidabad, West Bengal

June 17, 2025 to June 17, 2028

Hemanta Kumar Biswas was born in 1912 in Raninagar, Murshidabad district. His father was Gaur Sundar Biswas. Inspired by the renowned freedom fighter Haripada Chattopadhyay of Nadia district, Hemanta Kumar dedicated himself to the country’s independence movement.

In 1930, when Mahatma Gandhi called for the disobedience of the salt law, the movement spread across the Nadia district. Civil Disobedience took the form of mass protests, picketing and meetings. Hemanta Kumar actively participated in these demonstrations under the leadership of Haripada Chattopadhyay and was arrested for his involvement. Undeterred, he resumed his activism after his release, playing a crucial role in the second phase of the Civil Disobedience Movement. During this period, he also took part in the anti-tax campaign, which led to his re-arrest and imprisonment in the Krishnanagar Jail and Dum Dum Jail.

Despite enduring hardships in prison, Hemanta remained steadfast in his mission. The British colonial authorities’ repression only further strengthened his determination. He continued to engage in various movements until India gained independence, inspiring his fellow villagers with his unwavering resolve.

After independence, Hemanta devoted himself to public service, continuing his commitment to the welfare of society. His life stands as a testament to the power of resistance, dedication, and patriotism.
