Gopal Chandra Maiti was born in Bishnupur village, Undivided Medinipur district (Bankura District). His parents were Natabar Maiti and Sundari Devi. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, he joined the freedom struggle and actively participated in the Union Board Boycott Movement under Satish Chandra Das Adhikaris leadership in 1921. He served as the Secretary of the Narma-Uchitpur Congress Committee (Raina), which included Sabang and Narayanagarh Police Stations.
In 1926, Gopal Chandra became the Joint Secretary of the Sabang Congress Committee formed for flood relief and in 1928, he was elected Secretary of the Medinipur District Congress Workers Conference. Gopal was also in charge of the Sabang Charka Samiti and was its Secretary.
During the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930, Gopal Chandra participated actively in it and was arrested under Section-107 and sentenced to one year in prison without labour. After his release, he rejoined the Congress and became President of the Satirhat (Bankura) Central Congress Committee, formed from Sabang, Narayangar, Pingla and Kharagpur. He was also a member of the Sabang Thana Arbitration Board during the second phase of Civil Disobedience in the nation.
In 1942, during the Quit India Movement, Gopal Chandra led the formation of Rural Guards against Sabang and promoted social programs like untouchability abolition and traditional games. In 1943, he established Mohar High School under Aditya Kumar Bankura’s leadership. After independence, he dedicated himself to public service and became the first district board member elected from Sabang.
Gopal Chandra Maiti passed away on 11 August 1963.
