Surendra Nath Mukherjee was born in Varanasi to Lalit Mohan Mukherjee.

As a youthful idealist with a zeal for freeing India from foreign rule, he was among the pioneers of revolutionary activities in Uttar Pradesh. In 1913, he attempted to assassinate Lord Hardinge at Moghalsarai Railway station using a revolver he had smuggled from the Benaras state since his childhood. This bold attempt, following a similar one in Delhi in 1912, led to his arrest and subsequent trial under the Arms Act. However, he was released with a fine of Rs. 200 due to his status as an adolescent, following a several-month-long trial.

As an organizer of revolutionary activities in his state, he was implicated in the Benaras Conspiracy Case and detained from 1915 to 1920. He was only released during the general amnesty for political prisoners after World War I. In 1925, he was again arrested under the Arms Act, convicted, and released by the sessions court. Despite being in and out of jail multiple times, he eventually turned to spirituality and died in 1959.
